National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn met with the Vietnamese community in Senegal, reaffirming Vietnam's commitment to its overseas citizens and strengthening bilateral relations with the West African nation.

The meeting between the Chairman of the National Assembly and the community during his visit to Senegal reflects the deep concern of the Party and the State of Vietnam for overseas Vietnamese and serves as an important source of encouragement for both the Embassy staff and the Vietnamese community at large.

A representative of the Kim Hội Organization of Senegalese of Vietnamese Origin expressed joy over Vietnam’s recent socio-economic achievements and affirmed the organization's commitment to continuing to serve as a bridge between the two countries, promoting Vietnamese culture in Senegal, and contributing to deepening bilateral relations.

Highlighting Vietnam’s strengths in agricultural processing and rice production, the Kim Hội representative called on Vietnam to support Senegal in these fields. The representative also proposed strengthening cooperation in education and training, including sister-school programs, and preserving Vietnamese cultural identity within the Vietnamese community in Senegal.

Speaking at the event, Chairman Mẫn stated that the visit marks an important step in enhancing political trust and further deepening bilateral cooperation across various sectors.

During his visit, he is expected to hold talks with Senegalese leaders, including the President and Prime Minister, and co-chair a legal policy forum on promoting cooperation in agriculture, trade, and investment. The National Assemblies of the two countries are also set to sign a cooperation agreement to establish a legal framework for stronger legislative ties.

Updating the community on Vietnam’s current situation, Chairman Mẫn noted that after nearly 40 years of implementing the Đổi Mới (Renewal) policy, Vietnam has achieved significant socio-economic progress. GDP has surpassed USD 470 billion, and per capita income has reached approximately USD 4,700.

In 2024 alone, Vietnam’s economy grew by 7.09%, surpassing the ASEAN average and exceeding all 15 major development targets. In the first half of 2025, despite global and domestic challenges, Vietnam maintained robust growth at 7.52%. The country is striving to meet its annual growth target of 8.3% to 8.5%.

He emphasized that overseas Vietnamese communities, including those in Senegal, are an inseparable part of the Vietnamese nation. He highlighted key policies, including Politburo Resolution No. 36 and Directive No. 45, which affirm the vital role of overseas Vietnamese in the development and protection of the homeland.

Praising Kim Hội as an effective bridge between the two nations, the Deputy Prime Minister encouraged the organization to share updated information about Vietnam with the local community, including recent efforts to streamline the state apparatus and enhance national governance capacity. The Deputy Prime Minister also called on the Vietnamese Embassy in Hanoi to strengthen support for the community and promptly inform Vietnamese nationals in Hanoi of the Party’s guidelines and policies.
