The Windy weather tracking app was downloaded a lot as Typhoon Wipha approached the shore, thanks to its ability to visually display the storm's path and area of impact.

On the App Store on the morning of July 22, Windy ranked number one in terms of downloads in Vietnam. On Google Play, the app is in the top 10 and is also the most used Weather app on both platforms.

Windy downloads skyrocketed as Typhoon Wipha began to affect Vietnam, causing heavy rain in many localities. A series of articles appeared on technology, travel and social media forums with instructions on how to use Windy to see the storm's center, direction and wind speed.

"The application is constantly updated, so it's easy to visualize how the storm will affect you, and then prepare a response plan," Phuong Anh (Hanoi) shared.

Windy is a free application with a dynamic map interface that can display weather data layers such as rain, wind, clouds, pressure, etc. in real time. The application is highly appreciated for its accuracy, fast loading speed, and support for many languages, including Vietnamese, and can be accessed via the website. Users can refer to many forecast models including the GFS global weather forecast system, the model of the European Center for Meteorological Forecasting (ECMWF), and some systems such as ICON, ACCESS.

On the application or website, users can open the menu, select Warning, and click on Storm Tracker. Windy data shows that there are two storms that can be tracked, including Wipha. On the map, users will see the storm's expected path, circles of influence, wind speed, central pressure, and landfall time. When tapping the storm center icon, the app provides detailed information by hour. In addition, users can turn on additional layers such as radar, satellite, and rain maps for a more comprehensive view of weather developments.

In addition to Windy, users can monitor through the Vietnam Natural Disaster Monitoring System vndms.dmc.gov.vn. The website displays visual information about Vietnam's weather similar to Windy, and also has additional forecasts about the direction of movement and areas affected by the storm.

Another available option for smartphone or computer users is the Google Maps application. When accessing to view the route, Google Maps displays a warning about Wipha in the main interface. When clicking on it, the application will provide information including the current location and forecast of the storm's direction, areas with strong winds, based on data from the Japan Meteorological Agency, and news related to the storm. In addition, the application also recommends users to visit the website of the Vietnam General Department of Hydrometeorology to view.
