Vietnam U23’s Finishing Concerns Despite Perfect Group Stage Record at 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship

Vietnam U23 cruised through the group stage of the 2025 Southeast Asian U23 Championship with two straight wins and a +4 goal difference, topping Group B. However, as they gear up for the semifinal clash against the Philippines U23 on July 25, one major concern remains: their lackluster finishing in front of goal.

Despite dominating both group matches — against Laos and Cambodia — Vietnam’s attacking efficiency has left much to be desired. The team controlled possession impressively, but struggled to convert opportunities into goals. Against Laos, they held 80% of the ball and attempted 20 shots, yet only 8 were on target. A similar scenario played out versus Cambodia, with 67% possession and just 6 of 23 shots hitting the target.

In total, across both games, Vietnam U23 recorded 43 shots but only 14 were on target — a conversion rate of roughly 32%. This figure falls short of expectations, especially considering their overwhelming dominance in both matches.

With a physical and counter-attacking Philippines side up next, Vietnam’s inefficiency in front of goal could prove costly unless addressed swiftly.

One of the key issues facing Vietnam U23’s attack lies in converting dominant possession into goals. While the young squad is well-drilled, showing cohesive ball movement and solid group coordination, they continue to struggle with making that final breakthrough in the penalty area.

Too often, promising build-ups end with speculative long shots, poorly executed finishes, or a lack of precision inside the box. In situations where a simple cut-back or a delayed pass might have unlocked the defense, players instead opt for rushed, individual attempts.

To increase their scoring threat, Vietnam must diversify their offensive options. Forward Đình Bắc cannot shoulder the burden alone — midfielders and second-line attackers need to step up. Tactical plays such as low crosses from the wings, late runs from midfield, and quick one-two combinations through the middle must be utilized more effectively.

The ticket to the final is within reach, but to truly contend for the championship, Vietnam U23 must go beyond dominating possession. The players need to make the most of their chances — not rely on hopeful solo efforts but execute with clarity and purpose in the final third.
