Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard recently surprised fans by naming the teammate he considers the greatest he ever played alongside during his illustrious career.
In an interview with TNT Sports, Gerrard didn’t hesitate when asked who his best teammate was.
“Luis Suárez,” he answered firmly.
Although their time together at Liverpool was relatively short — from 2011 to 2014 — the Uruguayan striker left a lasting impression on the Anfield legend.
Suárez joined the Reds from Ajax in 2011 and quickly became a Premier League sensation with his lethal finishing, dazzling technique, and relentless fighting spirit. Despite not winning a major trophy during his time at Liverpool, Suárez was widely regarded as one of the world’s top forwards — a sentiment clearly shared by his former captain.

Over his nearly two-decade career at Liverpool, Steven Gerrard shared the pitch with countless world-class stars. From midfield maestros like Xabi Alonso and Javier Mascherano to prolific strikers such as Fernando Torres, Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler, and Daniel Sturridge, the former Reds captain played alongside some of the finest talents in football.
Yet, none left as deep an impression on Gerrard as Luis Suárez — who won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2013/14 season by scoring 31 goals in just 33 matches.
Gerrard has previously stated that Suárez had the ability to “carry the team on his back” and gave Liverpool a real chance of winning the Premier League that year — something the legendary midfielder never achieved during his playing days in England. Suárez’s remarkable stint at Liverpool came to an end in the summer of 2014, when he moved to Barcelona, where he continued to collect major titles in Spain.
Currently, Gerrard is on a break from coaching, having left Saudi club Al-Ettifaq earlier in 2025. His managerial career has included a title-winning, unbeaten season with Rangers in Scotland and a brief spell at Aston Villa.
Though retired from playing, Gerrard remains one of the most iconic figures in Liverpool history — and his choice of Suárez as the greatest teammate of his career speaks volumes about the Uruguayan striker’s extraordinary impact during his short but unforgettable spell at Anfield.
