Patients often ignore early signs of kidney cancer such as blood in the urine, back pain, weight loss, fever, fatigue, swelling, or night sweats.
Kidney cancer usually develops silently, with vague initial symptoms that are easy to confuse with common health issues. Aches, fatigue, and general discomfort are often dismissed as consequences of daily stress. However, these seemingly harmless symptoms can sometimes signal a more serious condition — especially kidney cancer.
Here are 7 early symptoms of kidney cancer that are often overlooked:
Blood in the urine
This symptom is commonly mistaken for a urinary tract infection or kidney stones. In particular, microscopic hematuria (blood not visible to the naked eye) is even more likely to be ignored. According to the American Cancer Society, this is one of the most common early signs, but also one of the most frequently missed.
Persistent pain in the flank or lower back
Kidney cancer can cause a dull, continuous ache in the side or lower back, just below the ribs. This pain doesn't improve with rest or changes in posture, unlike typical muscle aches. Early-stage kidney tumors can press against surrounding tissues, triggering this type of discomfort.
Unexplained weight loss
Sudden weight loss, especially without dieting or exercising, may indicate a serious condition. In kidney cancer, inflammation and cancer-related factors alter the body’s metabolism, leading to the loss of fat and muscle mass. Unexplained weight loss is a red flag in many types of cancer, including renal cell carcinoma.

Persistent Low-Grade Fever Without Infection
Kidney cancer, especially in its early stages, can cause recurring low-grade fevers. This happens as the immune system responds to the growth of a tumor.
This symptom is often overlooked because it doesn't come with cough, nasal congestion, or signs of infection—just a vague feeling of heat, fatigue, and discomfort.
Prolonged Fatigue
Fatigue caused by kidney cancer differs from regular tiredness. It is a deep, persistent exhaustion that doesn’t improve with rest.
A possible cause is anemia, which occurs when the tumor affects the kidney’s ability to produce erythropoietin—a hormone involved in red blood cell production. This leads to decreased oxygen delivery throughout the body, resulting in severe fatigue.
Swelling or Lump in the Abdomen or Flank
A kidney tumor may form a hard, immovable lump in the flank or lower back area. At first, it might not cause pain and can be mistaken for weight gain or bloating. In some cases, swelling only becomes noticeable when the tumor has grown large enough to press outward.
Night Sweats
Kidney cancer can trigger systemic inflammation, leading to excessive sweating during sleep. These night sweats aren’t mild—they can be intense enough to require changing clothes or bedsheets. This is the body’s way of trying to correct an internal imbalance, even before more obvious symptoms appear.
